san salvario
Passa alla versione in italiano
Among the districts we propose you, San Salvario is the nearest to the city center and extends between Porta Nuova railway station, the park of Valentino and Bramante road.
Its name comes from the church and monastery which have the same name and refers directly to Jesus Christe, the Saviour.
It is possible to find various traces about the existence of this area in some maps of 1790, but for the real district we have to wait till 1840, when the walls were teared down and San Salvario became the residential zone of Turin middle class.
Although FIAT was born in Dante road, and except for Microtecnica, which works in the spatial and armaments sectors, San Salvario is not a really industrial area. The district offers various commercial activities, among which the famous market of Madama Cristina square and, starting from the 90’, the night life developed giving space to a lot of pubs, restaurants, liquor stores and multiethnic shops.
Some of the most important architectural buildings are the synagogue in San Pio V street, a Valdese temple, a mosque and some churches. On the other hand the first FIAT productions workshops, the mechanic’s workshops in Raffello road and Villa Javelli in Petrarca street are a remarkable example of Liberty style.
Moreover there are the museum of criminal anthropology, the museum of human anatomy “Luigi Rolando” and the museum of fruits by Francesco Garnier Valletti for people who like this kind of collections.

The house among threes
Via Chiabrera, 25
This fantastic building, which looks like a real house on a tree, rises in one of the farthest district street from the city center. Inspired to the up-to-date international trends, it is an example of eco-friendly architecture and is an answer to the demand, more and more common in the big city centers, to bring back the green and the nature among cement, streets and buildings. The architects used eco-save and environmentally-friendly impact technologies and the façade calls to mind a forest, for the iron pillars which have the appearance of a tree and for the real plants that we can find in every floor.

Prostitute's palace
Via Principe Tommaso, 8
The facede of this palace has some busts in bas-relief to show the strong connection between "special clients" and the past. Those busts represent some prostitutes that once used to practise their job in a very discreet hotel that closed when the walls of the city were tore down. Some of their clients felt so nostalgic that deicided to pay tribute to the girls making a deal with the builder. Each bust is different from the others. The presence of the busts and the subjects they represent were in contrast with the aristocracy and bourguesy that populated the district at that time.
Car-bike holder
Via Belfiore
During one of the latest edition of "Paratissima", two bike holders were installed. They are located in via Baretti, and they have the form and dimesion of a real car. The objective is to make visible the difference between the space occupied by those two mediums of transport: the bike is small and eco-friendly, and the car is bulky and polluting.
Bats House
Via Madama Cristina, 19
The building has two main peculiar characteristics: the first one is the triangle-shaped plant, due to the ancient avenue “allea oscura” which joined the railway station to ducal residence of Valentino, and the other remarkable elements are the big bats which support a balcony for each facade. There is no explanation for the symbolic meaning of this mystery that fascinates every passer-by.
Dragoons House
